Social Studies

Should you get Social? - A fellow marketer and relative ‘home boy’, has been pounding my noodle with his Social Media Marketing hammer recently espousing the benefits that could be had. So this week I will add the Social Voidsome more fodder into the exchange that seeks to decide the true values of Social Media Marketing – I would look for some expanded views in the near future;

Let’s start right in with Jeff’s 7 Benefits of using Social Media Marketing piece which I suspect was a thinly veiled hint-grenade lobbed in my general direction. After that I started keeping an eye on my news reader(s)and found an interesting post from Sphinn-o-holic DoshDosh whom let’s us in on the Importance Of Social Media Marketing and why you should learn to master it. If you’d like some deeper data, the folks at ClickZ published findings that suggests that Advertisers are Keen on Social Networks.

One area I am always concerned with is that SMM is more of a brand building and management function than it is a conversions bonanza, so let’s talk ‘brand’. To get you started, Steven has some advice on How to Build Your Brand Through Social Media which you can follow up with a helping from ignite media on Using Social Media to Build Brands.

For the moment, I will leave you with those to ponder, as I said, I shall likely address this topic in more depth in the coming weeks – stay tuned

More Social –

Google and Facebook – First we had a report on the Google’s Response to FaceBook – MakaMaka and then later in the week Google revealed Open Social which I even found some nice screenshots of. There is more coverage about Open Social on TechCrunch and Mashable.

Power Stumble – Many of you have been a ‘Stumbler’ but how many have run actual marketing campaigns on Stumble? Tim Nash teaches us; StumbledUpon Advertising basics

Search World -

People Love Phrases – those of you that know about my unhealthy addiction with ‘Phrase Based Optimization’ will understand my interest in Searchers Have 2 Words for Google – It would seem that people search with a single word only some 15% of the time. 2Two word queries came in at 31% and three word searches at 27%. Death to the ‘keyword’ long live Phrases!!

Link Love - In the world of link building, it seems Debra is a Directory Addict. and Super-linker Wiep, looks into the great Link Bait debate by asking; Which Hook Attracts the Right Fish?

Technically inclined – Another one of my favourite SEO geeky hangouts, SEO Theory Blog, has a wonderful piece about the Theory of query space optimization – trust me, it’s not nearly as bad as it sounds – give it a read.

More PR Hoopla? – I ran into a some-what controversial post from the G-Lady with some Juicy Google PageRank rumors

Sneaky Google Monkey – there was a story this week in PC Magazine (online) of all places which has some folks in a bit of a tizzy that Google is up to Hanky-panky in the SERPs.

By the numbers -

Data mining – The folks at eMarketer had some interesting data about retailers plans for the year ahead and worries with; PPC is popular… sort of.. In other forecasting news, Marketing VOX reported that studies believe that Search Will Soar and News Will Nose-dive as revenues for the worldwide information industry top $440 Billion by 2010

For more data goodiness you can also check out some great Example Uses of the Visitor Engagement Metric and Unlocking Key Performance Indicators Bouce-Rate. Gotta get geeky wid dat goodiness, oui?

Convert this – you can have al the traffic in the world, if they don’t convert, what’s the point? Search Engine Watch had an interesting ditty in looking at; Life After Search - A/B Split and Multivariate testing .

 Quick Hits -

Blogging – theLisa reminds us all not to bore the crap out of each other in Blog like a Person Not a Cyborg -

Staying Relevant – Steve Harr with a favourite topic of mine (relevance); Search Quality Depends on Intention

Like, O M’Gawd! – It’s silicone Chicks! – Strange Social Networking Site that I don’t know what to make of…

Blog Rush update – from the ‘so last month’ file BlogRush quietly had an update which Mashable called All Blog and No Rush -

AdSense Retirement Plan – all of those blooming boomers can now look forward to a peaceful (made for AdSense) retirement thanks to Google

Google PC – Look out Microsoft, Wal-Mart is now offering the Google Computer to which GoogleLady has some further coverage with Google PC Out Today!

Hiya VG - no worries, I was looking for some goodies and yours stuck out.

I have some more thoughts on SMM, simply not enough time - so many rants, so little time.

You know how these 'News' bits go. You have your own (excellent) weekly offering. It's tough finding the signal in all the noise :0)
