Google Custom Search Engine

Today Matt Cutts, of Google fame, was talking about the Google Custom Search Engine . This I must say is a pretty cool concept.

“This new offering lets you easily add hundreds (thousands?) of urls. You can search over ONLY the sites you choose, or (my favorite) you can apply a boost to the sites you choose, with regular websearch as a backfill. That’s really nice, because if your chosen urls talk about a subject, you’ll often get matches from those urls, but if the user types something completely unrelated, you’ll still get web results back. So it’s a true custom search engine, not just an engine restricted to showing matches from some domains”

Here are the links to Matt’s Blog Post and the Google Custom Search Engine . Have fun and report back!

I'm not so sure that this search engine would even be relevent, unless somehow google gave you automatic high rankings for other people using search terms on their own site.

Obviously, it's just another tool to try and track users, etc. Not a big deal. Frankly, I don't give a damn if google knows I went to assbangers.com or any other site for that matter.

As far as the money is concerned, I don't see your cool new engine having any lasting power, unless you had the serious hard cash to back up the marketing efforts, just to get it off the ground. Then there is the problem with staying power. How can you compete with Google... I mean, if Yahoo and MSN don't stand a chance, then what the hell am I suppose to do?

It might be some neat little ditty for a moment, and some people should probably consider it as yet another marketing tool for their own retail sites in some way... but I still think it would be rather short lived.

'course... i've been wrong before.

I just had another thought.... I don't know anything about this 'engine' you can have, but....

Can you manipulate the results via picking the ranks? Is it possible to at least make changes to your site, and see what happens with the new search engine?

My be a good idea just to look at from an SEO perspective.....

From the scuttle-butt I have read around, I believe the rankings stay intact. It is manipulation of the markets/segments.

Maybe I will thnk about hooking it into this site to play with.. time permitting ha ha ha ha... time permitting... that's is funny huh?

Hi Boys, Girls, Dave, I was already using the Google customized search but I decided to give it a try, any way I can always stick the old one back in. But know that I do not do it for SEO, I did it because the results for my site were much better, plus I got to run AdSense on a page that was otherwise void. It’s not a MFA site so I figured since the old search had ads; I might as well get paid if someone clicks them.

So where was I???? Oh, you can mess around with mine by being a contributor if ya want to. I sell Hawaiian shirts so don’t mess up and make me have to undo it. LOL
