Brilliant post! The new trend among the people around the world is social media. I think with increasing popularity of Twitter and Facebook now Google has launched its new product Social search. I never got a chance to use it. I read some information about it here and gained some good knowledge about its features and settings. Anyway thanks for sharing.

@Sam and Jim - Bing does sadly lack in that regard still. The addition of the dedicated Twitter search is interesting, but unlikely to be enough to really push the envelop. I still think Google will add some type of RTS/Twitter search.. so add in the new GSS and Wave, it's a more formidable combination. @Howie, that's part of the problem in that they're aren't indexing/ranking citations with it yet. That would definitely need to be added as would better controls/filters. Your second point is the big one; adoption. I do wonder what elements such as search wiki, side wiki and this actually get used. We shall see... might just be another marketers toy...lol

Is social search relevant or needed?

I personally see this as a niche technology. I myself am very wary about opening up too much of my activities to others, and certainly do not wish to be plugged into the grid 24/7. That being said I can see some uses for Social Search, like wanting to see if anyone I know posted how they liked a restaurant or about a new DJ they love. Right now even with current social network technology this is not easily done. And if the Social Search can tie in with out of social results...like that new restaurant I searched for also turned out the City Search or Yelp page with reviews that would be killer.

Thanks mate xlnt post - @samir I don't think Bing had marketshare to begin with. I think MS should focus on enterprise search. I agree with your points on SEO is this or that. It used to be just about kw meta, then kw density, then Google came along, then the game changed. One thing is certain it will keep changing.

Hiya Marjory - that's actually also a interesting addition to the puzzle. While that app has been buggy, should it get wider adoption out of beta, the 'contacts' element does also seem like it would be part of the (potential) evolution of their social ties. When I was writing this, I noted that Google had also included some of the FriendConnect peeps as well. There are a few ways this might go... fun stuff really.

Interesting post. I just skimmed it (have to watch the videos later) but it sure seems like social search is a lot closer than we thought. How does Google Wave fit into this picture?
