Brand Bias...

I've seen a bit of "brand bias" in the accommodation sector. It seems that a few of the well known portals are now ranking higher than the smaller localised sites. Personally I think that the smaller site should rank higher (mostly because I think the portals are shocking all round). Could this simply be a shift in PageRank... I'm not talking that stupid little green bar though. Could it be that certain sites have simply lost/gained link strength in an "algo" change?

Or they just count the number of times someone search for the brand and let that affect searches associated to the brand. Or more likely look at stuff like this for reg. users: Search for stuff-A -> Do not find / Unhappy. Search for brand-B -> Happy. I beliave they do something similar with with phrase-search which I beliave come around the same time. Serch for phrase -> Do not find ( Unhappy Use Google search suggestion -> Find something similar - > Search -> Happy Association in Google between phrase and keyword hierarki. Best regards & Good luck with you blog which is rather good. Hans

HG... my brother, actually I mentioned agreeing there is a shift... In the post I wrote; I was simply theorizing that existing algos would be tweaked not new ones created as written elsewhere (after Aaron's post) - and mentioned No worries tho... when I read it I was troubled if I made sense... but being my birthday, I decided to fire it off. I understand the clarity wasn't the best. As for your assertions (or Aaron's for that matter) they are as good as any. So I simply should have written A. Something is up B. Here's some ideas what might be afoot C. There sure are some whacked theories out there he he In the end I was tripping over my words between the frustration of some theories floated (after Aaron's post) and then comments made around town.... sigh... over passionate can be problematic..lose my train As for research/pooling ideas, I've seen Ruud pounding the drum and found a few reasonable scenario's over the last few days..Just need to get the best ones together and start deciding how to isolate elements and research directions. Want to play? Do get in touch, the more the merrier. BTW... do we call it the 'Brandy Update' ? he he... (funniest one I've heard to date)

I think that everything you're saying here is valid. My only disagreement is with your assertion that a significant shift hasn't occurred (aka an "update"). While it may very well be rooted in existing methods, the fact is that some very notable shifts have occurred for major terms, and most of the sites associated with these shifts seem to be large brands. I tried very hard to point out that scientific method should be applied when trying to analyze this whole phenomenon and I think that we can all agree that with just six days or so since Aaron released the data, any grand proclamations about what is or isn't causing this shift should be considered little more than flights of fancy (six days is not enough time for experimenting and replication). It's why I dismissed my own assertions in my guest post over at Aaron's blog.
