I remember telling people that recips were dead about 2 years ago and getting lynched for it. The problem is that a huge industry has been built around recip exchanges and that it is going to take many years for the concept to die.

Yes, I did get that memo. I think I filed it right next to the memo that directory links are dead, that blog comment links are dead (even if they are "dofollow"), that article submissions are dead (duplicate content), etc. And of course, press releases and blog post content is worthwhile only when fresh, before being filed in PR0 oblivion. That does leave us all with a bit of a dilemma. My takeaway from all this? Balance. Yep. The more balanced and varied the links, the less of a pattern. The less of a pattern, the more natural. The more natural, the more pleased the search engines will be. Your comments on social media are well taken - the resulting links are natural, thus avoiding an artificial pattern. Even the anchor text is beyond our control, which is actually a positive thing when it comes to a natural linking patter. But I believe there is also a place for link exchanges, article submissions, directory submissions, etc., as long as no one approach is dominant. My other takeaway? You are confirming for me what I have always believed - that 3-way link exchanges are a waste of time and in fact might be harmful, as they are a more obvious attempt to manipulate the SE rankings than a straight link exchange.
