I think the Facebook connect implementation currently on Techcrunch is a lot more interesting, though I am not quite sure how that should be used for membership sites based upon blog platforms. I am sure the friend connect API can be used in more interesting ways. One thing positive, if you become a member of a blog using friend connect (at least on blogger), then you also become a subscriber in Google Reader with special filtering.

Well, more interesting to me than the SearchWiki are the set of patents from earlier this year on social network profiling that seem suited OpenSocial, YouTube and toys like these. While Yahoo may be ahead in the social curve, Google is well positioned to monetize them. The true test... @John, I am with you as far as looking for more widgets, the offering is def limited at this point.. but I shall give it a while...

I think that the comment / rating widget will simply serve to water down posts since, as you pointed out, we already have commenting capabilities on our blogs and such. However my guess is that Google isn't looking to provide a second option to MBL or to comment systems. I'm willing to bet they are banking on the possibility of people using these widgets as opposed to other built in options with things like Wordpress and such. Either way, I'm having the Friend and Rating / Review widgets added to my blogging mothers community for a few months to see if it catches on. I too hope for more widgets to come in the near future that will make Friend Connect that much more appealing to me.

Yahoo has been far ahead of Google when it comes to profiles, and profile based platforms. From mybloglog to Yahoo 360...I think this is Google catching up. I do agree with Zak that the timing of Search wiki and fiend connect is "interesting".
