Solid wrap-up of SMM

I liked this piece a lot as it not only touched on the obstacles but succinctly connected the pieces together. Yes, SMM is better for branding and big businesses who can outsource the work but it does have its benefits for SMBs. Your point of SMM and SEO is one that most dont discuss and it is a major reason that I am attracted to this medium. It takes hard work to succeed at but if you actively target SEO as part of your efforts the payoffs are double and especially can be shared as such with clients. Thanks for the piece and the good links/articles to read from it

Hi Dave, this is bloody good! i've been watching SMM for a while, never having been comfortable using it in seo. I think there is so much confusion with it because: a. traditional, 'marketing' companies know about reaching an audience using offline media, tv ads, radio campaigns, poster campaigns etc, they know about branding and such but when it comes to 'internet marketing' they see it as a separate provision b. online marketing has always been about campaigns that can be measured with evidence of conversions, so affiliate marketing, website banner ads, ppc. these types struggle to understand how to measure seo c. seo is about getting ranks, not conversions but the seo industry have probably abused the hell out of SMM before figuring out that their efforts have been near to useless because their focus has been on ranks. Everyone has been scrambling around trying to work out how they can take advantage of SM networks to compliment their existing provision without recognising that its actually an entirely separate activity. You are spot on too about the client not understanding what it can do...so when they are being sold SMM by a company who ALSO don't really get it its becoming the 'rocket science' that seo is perceived to be. good job ;-)
