I hope you don't mind but I've translated this article to portuguese and re-published it at http://seonoticiaseartigos.blogspot.com/2008/03/viso-de-uma-dama-seo-para-aplicao-de.html - of course, with DO-FOLLOW links for the original! I am beginning a campaign among brazilian blogosphere against those indiscriminate uses of nofollow. Everything you said is clearly just plain good common sense. I think that if you wouldn't link to a site for any reason, you'd better not link at all. This nofollow terror policy leads to nothing good but the destruction of generosity on the web.

SEO Black hat and White hat are two sides to the same coin. Defining SEO then would be difficult as even over time the definition will change. Jeff alluded to the long run in SEO, but will there be a long run? Google can always come down harder on SEO practices. The only thing stopping them it seems is any moves they make will see a huge backlash against them as millions of webmasters use SEO professional services or do it themselves from the advice many find on this site as well as Sphinn and others. As for the SEO's that are scared to death of Google's next move, all I have to say is that is no way to live. Diversify now as if you were just destroyed by Google. Tell SEO's now to do what they have to to not rely on any one search engine. So who is up for a good overview of SEO as Jeff said?

Hey J (lyrical huh?) - not as much these days, but still existant is the fact the SEO gets confused with Black Magic occasionally. I think the definitions for the world of SMM and some more discussion of practioners offerings would be in order. I know how SEO folks can get bored and start to dabble in SMM, but I believe it to be a service on it's own. A service that is more about branding and merely crosses the borders of SEO here and there.... Either way, some more clarity can't hurt things.

Nice piece Dave ... I truly love this type of dialogue. It can only serve to further our understanding of how all the pieces fit together in the long run. Sounds like we might need to define certain terms to move forward. That said; lets start with SEO. Thoughts?
