18 Must Follow Link Building Experts on Twitter PDF  | Print |  E-mail

(the following is a guest post from Melanie Nathan)

Ask a SEO what their least favorite task is and they’ll most likely tell you it’s link building. That’s because link building can be tedious, time consuming and mind numbingly hard.

What does that say about the following people, who have consciously chosen to make link building a main weapon in their SEO arsenal? That they eat SEO lightning and crap link building thunder!

<...... cue Rocky theme ............>

Links + Anchor text means high rankings

These aren’t just people who know “a little about link building”. Oh no. These people are so well versed and experienced, that they can very safely be considered experts on the subject (though most of them will hate being called experts).

They all have a special aptitude for one of the hardest aspects of SEO, and since effective link builders are an especially rare, yet often overlooked breed, they’re being recognized here today.

Let the linking begin!

Here they are in no particular order:

Wiep Knol

@wiep  is the manager of link marketing at Tribal; an Internet marketing company in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He’s highly respected yet very approachable and his Link Building This Month posts are cornucopias of link building awesomeness. I’ll be guest posting for him soon but that’s totally not why he made the list. What?! He’s a legend. For reals.

Debra_Mastaler

@debramastaler is President of Alliance-Link which is an interactive marketing company based out of Williamsburg, Virginia. She’s one of the few respected female link builders out there, a fountain of smart and one of my professional heroes.

Will Reynolds

@wilreynolds is the founder of SEER Interactive; an Internet marketing company based in Philadelphia. Seeing as he’s a link builder who loves search and what it can do for businesses, he’s a smart guy and well worth listening to.

Gab Goldenberg

@gabgoldenberg is a down-to-earth link building whiz based out of Quebec, Canada. At 22 he’s already president of his own successful Internet marketing company and has received public kudos from some of the industry’s biggest leaders.

Todd Malicoat

Todd Malicoat aka @stuntdbl is a respected marketing consultant and legendary link builder based out of San Francisco. We chatted about secret link resources once and I hope to again sometime soon. I also hope he’ll start blogging again or at least bring back #tooltimewithtodd on twitter.

Will Crithclow

@will_crithclow runs Distilled which is a smashingly awesome website expertise company based out of London. I once conversed (via email) with Will regarding some of my juicer link building techniques. He then wrote this link building post, which I was super proud to be a small part of.

Michael Streko

Michael Streko aka @streko, co-founder of Knowem, isn’t technically a link builder by profession but he’s taught me a thing or two about it and plus I like how he thinks like an engineer (not this one though). This is why he’s often one of the few people I’ll trade my juiciest link secrets with and among the first people I think of when asked about link builders.

Christoph C. Cemper

Christoph Cemper aka @cemper is a well-known link builder based out of Vienna, Austria. I follow his stuff and learn a lot from the case studies he publishes. Plus he puts out some awesome link building videos.

Eric Ward

@ericward founded the Web’s first link building service and is arguably one of the most well-known link builders on the planet. As if that’s not enough the man ranks #1 for link building expert (#jeez). Betcha didn’t know he’s available for training and private consultation too.

Julie Joyce

@JulieJoyce is co-founder of Link Fish Media; a link building company headquartered in Greensboro, NC and is one of the founding members of the SEO Chicks blog. She’s kind, smart, funny and, even without the link building ninja thing, would be a must follow on twitter.

Gerald Weber

Gerald Weber aka @the_gman is the founder of a Houston based marketing firm. He’s an old school link developer with impressive new-age link baiting skills. He also has a very admirable number of digg front-pages and is happy to share his knowledge with those he trusts.

Brian Chappell

@brianchappell is a large scale link specialist with Ignite; a Social Media company based out of Raleigh, NC. He uses his blog to talk about things that most people don’t want to share and his twitter account to make you think. Veteran SEOs all the way down to aspiring bloggers will find his tweets useful.

Patrick Gavin

@PatrickGavin is a marketing consultant based out of Chicago and co-founder of Text Link Ads. His twitter stream is always full of juicy link tips and he’s a natural follow for anyone interested in the world of link building.

Garrett French

Ben-Wills.jpg

@GarrettFrench and @benwills are Internet marketing veterans. Together they form Ontolo; a link building agency based out of Raleigh, NC. Their objective is to provide the most effective link building solution they possibly can and from the sounds of it, they’re doing just that.

Ryan Clark

Ryan Clark aka @linkbuildr is a link building consultant based out of Vancouver, Canada. He’s funny, smart and really seems to have his finger on the pulse of the link building community.

Aaron Wall

@aaronwall is a man who, if you’re at all involved in the link building world, needs no introduction. You probably already use his link building tools at SEOBook, so just follow him on twitter already.

Angela Moore

Angela Moore aka @amcmoore is director of link development at Intrapromote; a big brand search agency. In addition to Angela’s client-focused link development efforts, she is also a moderator in the Search Engine Watch link building forum.

Honorable Mention:

Jim Boykin

@jimboykin is definitely one of the top link developers in the industry, unfortunately he doesn’t seem to be on twitter very often. Hopefully he can find the time to start tweeting again soon.

If I forgot anyone be sure to let me know via the comments below!

Great post Melanie! I follow a number of these fine folks already (well sorta, don't get me started on my current Twitter fiasco), but you listed a handful that I wasn't aware of and will definitely be checking out.
  • The Dude Dean
How does a Dude in the top 100 active users on Digg get on this list?
  • Rob Bell  - Great list
I always appreciate articles that introduce me to excellent citizens of the Twitterverse. I was already following a couple including yourself, now I'm following all the list. Thank you for the introductions.
  • Gerald Weber  - Search Engine Marketing Group
Thanks for including me on the list. I am honored. =)
  • Eric Ward  - With thanks
Thanks for the include. Gotta give a shout out for Rand Fishkin here as well. He does many things extremely well, link building included. Also Michael Martinez. I've learned much from him.
  • Bill Saint  - Very Nice...!
Thank you for putting this great list of link builders together! I'm excited to expand my knowledge!
  • Trontastic  - Oh Yeah!
    Let the Twitter stalking begin!

Actually I follow most of this list already but have never really considered many as top link builders. You could probably list these gems under a number of titles. All in all, a great list of people to pay attention to on and offline.

  • Internet Strategist @GrowMap.c  - Could you TweepML the list for us?
Thanks for the list and I have a request. Would you consider setting these up in TweepML http://tweepml.org/ to make it fast and easy to follow them all?
  • Dana Lookadoo
Melanie, gosh! This post has to go down of one of the best list posts of all time and surely to get some great links! :-)

A great takeaway is your listing of some linkbuilders who don't "advertise" themselves as such and we think of them as great SEOs & social media specialists. One thing I've learned watching you is that link building is about thinking creatively and building relationships.

Thanks for sharing so much of your insight and especially such terrific recommendations!
  • Garrett French
I follow @melanienathan for link building - she was too modest to mention herself on the list, but often drops great link building tips.

    G
  • Julie Joyce  - Thanks
Thanks again for the mention. I feel very, very honored to be included on such a list. I'd really like to see more niche lists such as this, where we're shown people to follow who specialize in...well, any part of SEO.

I'd also like to say that while she does many things, Ann Smarty's (@seosmarty) amazing SEO advice has been invaluable to me as a link builder. I very rarely read a piece that she's written without seeing something I can snag and use for my work.
  • debra mastaler  - Thanks!
Thanks for including me and I echo what Julie said about Annie. :)

Also, Dixon Jones, Loren Baker, Justilien Gaspard, Roger Monti and Bob Gladstein have been know to build a link or two and let's not forget my partner in crime Bob Massa.

    =)
  • Ann Smarty  - Nice list :)
Julie, thanks for your kind words - really encouraging!
  • Contempt  - Hmmm...
I think you forgot @Bofu2U ;) Har har
  • Wil Reynolds  - Thanks
    Thanks for the shout out!
  • Marco Ziero  - What about Maurizio Petrone? :)
I think you forgot Maurizio Petrone (http://twitter.com/MaurizioPetrone), brilliant italian link building expert. :)
  • Ryan Clark  - Blushing
Thanks for the listing, it was an honor. Hopefully everyone reads the comments because some amazing people were listed there!

  • Rob Woods  - Another awesome post
Great info. I must have been doing my homework because I already followed everyone on the list. It may go without saying because you're the author but you forgot to put yourself on the list!
  • Patty Adams  - Don't forget Arnie Kuenn from Vertical Measures
Arnie Kuenn runs one of the largest SEO link building companies in US, was a speaker on link building at SMX Advanced and for the American Marketing Association and has been building links for over a decade! He’s not just a great link building professional, but is well-versed on all aspects of SEO. @ArnieK Full discloser: I work for him. =)
  • Global Domains International  - Global Domains International
I've found link building to be tedious as well but when you have a little help it can go a long way. Even without help it will take you far... It will also just take a bit longer but still well worth it.
  • John McTigue  - Interesting List
This is a great list from the established link building community, but what about people outside that niche, for example inbound marketers like Mike Volpe, Chris Brogan and Justin Levy? Their mojo is very effective in building inbound links but somewhat different from the strategies most of your list talks about.
  • Noah
Awesome list! Already followed a few of those on the list, but some of the others look quite nice.

P.S. This post is #10 for link building expert for me. ;)
  • Web design London  - Good
List is great and i am actually following most of them and its good that some of them are following back me .
  • Steve Merrick - FirstFound  - Thanks!
I'll be working through that list this afternoon. What can I say, anyone who craps thunder needs to be followed!
